The Exorcist Reboot Reportedly In The Works For 2021 Release
The Exorcist is reportedly being rebooted, with a plan to release the next chapter of the horror franchise in 2021. The original movie, which came out in 1973, became one of the most iconic horror films of all time. It was nominated for 10 Academy Awards (including Best Picture), winning two of them. Since then, there have been multiple installments of the franchise, although it’s lost some steam over the years and some will question whether or not a remake of the horroer movie is necessary.
This sentence was at the bottom of a Deadline article this afternoon, and it has sent a ripple of confusion through the horror community: “Current Morgan Creek projects include Stay Tuned at AMC, with a planned theatrical reboot of The Exorcist in the works for 2021.” Fox’s TV version of The Exorcist wrapped up its two season run back in 2017, but this is the first time we’re hearing about a feature film reboot, let alone one that might be ready for theatrical release as soon as next year.
But The Exorcist may finally be ready to make a return. According to Deadline, one of the projects Morgan Creek Entertainment is working on – in addition to a Dead Ringers TV show – is a reboot of The Exorcist. Interestingly, one of the nuggets included is a potential 2021 release date, which feels rather soon for a movie that hadn’t been publicly announced until this week.
All the sequels and prequels flopped, while the TV series lasted only two years before getting the axe. If Morgan Creek Entertainment are indeed rebooting the property, they will need to make sure that top tier talent is involved in order to ensure this new take on The Exorcist works.
The original Exorcist film performed so well that it ended up being nominated for 10 Academy Awards of which it won two. It also spawned four spin-off movies, and a recent TV series on Fox.
With so many classic films getting the reboot treatment these past few years, it is surprising that a film as popular as The Exorcist took this long to be rebooted. We can only wait and see if Morgan Creek Entertainment comes out with a statement regarding this.
