The Witcher: Blood Origin Prequel Series Announced By Netflix

Netflix has announced The Witcher: Blood Origin, a limited series from The Witcher universe. Blood Origin will be a six part, live-action limited series, and a prequel to the streamer’s series The Witcher. Set in an elven world 1,200 years before the world of The Witcher, the show will chart the origins of the very first Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.

Blood Origin will take place 1,200 years before the events of The Witcher, when the Conjunction of the Spheres took place, the cataclysmic event responsible for all the monsters and magic leaking into the world. The story is mostly about the Elven world before those pesky humans showed up and started ruining everything. According to the show’s description, it seems like the timeline will be altered where we will actually see the Conjunction of the Spheres happen despite the books describing it as happening 1,500 years before Geralt’s story, so the math is a tiny bit fuzzy there.

In addition to being about witchers, it sounds like the series will explore Elves, monsters, and the general foundational lore of the series which hasn’t been explored very much by the mainline Netflix series, the games, or the books either are based off. Further, we know Andrzej Sapkowski, creator of the series, is involved, presumably as a creative consultant.

No cast members have been announced just yet, but The Witcher‘s Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will serve as executive producer alongside Declan de Barra (Marvel’s Iron Fist), who will act as showroomer.

Declan de Barra said:

“A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books: What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans?

“I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilisations; how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall. How vast swathes of knowledge are lost forever in such a short time, often compounded by colonisation and a rewriting of history, leaving only fragments of a civilisation’s true story behind.

“The Witcher: Blood Origin will tell the tale of the Elven civilisation before it fell, and most importantly reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher.”

The Witcher, based on the book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, debuted last year with Henry Cavill in the starring role as monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia. It quickly became Netflix’s biggest hit series yet, according to the streaming giant.
